Why is this subject matter important to you? Pataphysics, the science of imaginary solutions, is an artistic genre that I find relevant to use in a world where nothing ever make sense. In Pataphysics, things are absurd but they reveal things that normal logical statement cannot express.

Why is this subject matter important to you? It is important to me because I believe greatly in the power that comes from communication. Also as a teacher, I have observed how the best solutions to challenges and exercises come from the participation of the group and not necessarily or only from the contributions of a few. This piece is a digital self-portrait painted in Photoshop. In many of my portraits and in this sketch in particular, I tend to focus on general color blocking, simple shading, and some basic detail work. Although one minute is not enough to show the totality of this approximately 30-minute process, I hope to give you all a glimpse into what digital painting can look like. Of course, the process is different for everyone!

Who are you? I'm a visual artist from Northern Kentucky, and I've called Cincinnati home for my whole life. I currently attend the University of Cincinnati's DAAP Program as a Fine Arts major with a focus on painting, drawing, and printing. I love all forms of art, but my favorite subject is portraiture.

Why is this subject matter important to you? I've loved making art all my life, but I started taking it seriously when I was around 12 years old. Since then, I've worked very hard to get to where I am, and I've been lucky enough to have opportunities to further my artistic career (such as attending the University of Cincinnati DAAP Program!) The friends I have made and the wonderful mentors I have learned from have helped me nurture my passion for art and hone my skills. Fimo clay is a pretty versatile medium for creating little embellishments for jewelry or other projects at home. I have used Fimo to create beads, buttons and hand-sculpted embellishments to stitch onto embroidery projects. Use your hands to warm and soften the clay for easier sculpting and with your hands or other clay tools, shape as desired. Roll, twist, press into beads; smooth and shape sides and add little holes for stitching or stringing onto projects. Follow the directions on package for baking instructions.

Little Clay Things

Who are you? Hello! I am a artist and informal/community based educator living in Cincinnati. I currently work at the Cincinnati Museum Center, managing some creative spaces and programs, as well as food science initiatives. I love our creative community here in Cincinnati, and proud to be a part of it!

Where are you from? When my family first moved here in the early 80's, we lived in Hawaiian Terrace in Mt. Airy. We lived there for a while before moving to Finneytown where I spent most of my growing up years playing outside and running around the neighborhood. I studied Art History, art education and community-based art in college, and worked as a visual teaching artist in the West End and Kennedy Heights neighborhoods as I worked through my degree. I graduated from DAAP with a degree in Art Education and a job as a public school art teacher, and bought a house in Carthage and lived there for 12 years. After physically growing out of our home, my husband two daughters and I moved back to Mt. Airy and have lived here since 2016.

Description: Fimo clay is a pretty versatile medium for creating little embellishments for jewelry or other projects at home.

Why is this subject matter important to you? I wanted to show that making little clay embellishments was easy to do, as opposed to buying plastic buttons or other plastic pieces and parts. I wanted to add a 3D touch to my embroidery, and started looking for little flower embellishments. Not satisfied with the material choices, selection or price, I decided to make some myself! I also like the surprise of how nicely these two seemingly different mediums (clay and embroidery) can compliment one another.

Further Information: If you use this method to make real buttons to add to clothing, feel free to experiment but full disclaimer; I have not tried to run fimo clay buttons or embellishments through a washer/dryer. My guess is it wouldn't hold up very well, just as an FYI. @arynnblazer

White Oak Acorn Cap Ink

Where are you from? Claiming Cincinnati as home since 2006

Description: This ink is made using only water, heat, time, acorn caps, and some rusty old nails. I found the recipe for this ink in the book “Make Ink” which is available from the Cincinnati Library.

Why is this subject matter important to you? Encouraging other (especially grownups) to make time for creativity, fun, and learning new things is always important to me, but especially right now! Making ink specifically from foraged materials combines these healthy habits with also getting outside for some fresh air/nature time and exercise. Ink has been a somewhat recent addition to my ongoing hobby of learning how to make my own art supplies. It has brought me a few stained shirts and giant messes and occasionally a very “interesting” smelling apartment but also a lot of joy, and I love that it doesn’t require spending any money, and doesn’t create any waste. I hope this video can inspire someone to do this fun project on their own or with their family and look forward to seeing your inks or drawings if anyone makes this at home!

"Everything Stays" is a meditation on the current state of events brought about by Covid-19 from the perspective of a small, imaginary friend. The song that the work is paired with and is inspired by is "Everything Stays", written and performed by Rebecca Sugar, with additional vocals by Olivia Olson. All animation and video clips were filmed and brought to life by yours truly, Quincy. I see this work as the height of my current artistic career, and I am immensely proud of the reaction it elicits from its viewers. It touches on themes of escapism and imagination, as this character was created by me when I was 12 or 13, and in that he continues to show up in my current work represents my desire for simpler times and a break from new adult responsibilities. My hope for my viewers in watching "Everything Stays" is for them to think about their daily routine during this time of isolation, how they relate to themes of escapism, and to check in with their personal mental health and how they can begin or continue to practice self-care in their day-to-day. A little magic goes a long way!

As much as I love studying art and design, in my free time I like to unwind by doing other things. I know that not every school offers a meal plan, and it can be hard deciding what to eat everyday. I want to encourage people to start cooking! Hopefully they'll save money, and enjoy doing it. I am also very proud of my Filipino heritage, and I don't see a lot of representation out there compared to other cultures. This recipe was passed down to me, and I want to share it with as many people as possible. I love my home, my family, and I'm proud of my heritage. It was a good way to make some side cash but above all I really just enjoyed seeing how happy people would get when I would deliver their bread loaves! Why is this subject matter important to you? As an artist who focuses on social issues, I spend a lot of time not only contemplating the state of our communities but also existing in them. I have seen first hand that the places where people treat one another the most respectfully are in places where they feel dignified and respected. These are places like museums, parks, and libraries where professors, children, homeless men and women, and anyone who feels like entering is welcomed into a space of collaboration.

In this short film, I embrace doodling. For someone who is an artist, I used to feel as if my doodles were small, shallow, and pointless images that would never become this "perfect" playful view despite being quick images of thought. I believe there is a lot of pressure when claiming the title of an artist, that of which every piece made must fit a certain view of excellent linework, craftsmanship, and overall execution, in "emily's whatever & all-ever" I embrace that not every work has to fit this cliché expectation.

Why is this subject matter important to you? This subject matter of challenging the expectation of perfection is important to not only me, but all artists and those who create because expression should not be held to a standard of perfection and beauty. Why is this subject matter important to you? Quilting is traditionally 'women's work', and is not always viewed as a 'respectable' or 'high-art' medium. The beauty in these objects is that they are not only utilizable, but ubiquitous. Anyone who has helped make a quilt is an artist, and have made something that people can not only use, but aesthetically appreciate. The inherently community-oriented nature of this art form is fascinating to me, and I hope to continue spending my time expanding the pool of quilters in the world, and the pool of people who appreciate them.

This video gears to help educate trans guys, nonbinary folx, agender, bigender, etc. about voice training specifically, deepening your voice Pre-T. I demonstrate one progressive vocal cord exercise/stretch to perform twice a day for at least 10-15min which you could split up - 10min in the morning & 15min in the evening (this is how I started). This vocal cord exercise is supposed to stretch and relax the vocal cords in order to slow the vibrations when you speak which results in lowering your voice.

Voice Training (Deepening voice)

Created by: Jace Rubino

Who are you? I'm a local queer performance artist. My alter ego (Drag King) persona is Prinze Valentino. I'm nonbinary, androgyne and use they/them pronouns out of drag, he/him in drag. I've lived in Cincinnati for about 2 years now and been performing in drag for just under 2 years! I'm very involved in the lgbtq+ community and regularly attend virtual support groups. I strive to be a role model in the community especially for the trans nonbinary folx with my flamboyant authenticity. I love to motivate others to be their authentic selves and share resources with those who need it. I also recently started a YouTube Channel with Prinze Valentino and plan to create monthly videos to share my progress and experience with voice training, (deepening my voice).

Where are you from? Detroit, MI, U.S.

Why is this subject matter important to you? Voice Training is meaningful to me because my entire life has revolved around me manipulating my body and voice to feel and sound different than how I was regularly perceived in society. I've been actively voice training since I was a kid because I knew I didn't relate to being a "girl" which meant that I had to be a "boy", right? Silly enough, gender didn't turn out to be as simple as I thought. I came out as nonbinary, androgyne about 3 years ago and recently legally changed my name to Jace. This was a huge step in the right direction for me! Furthermore, my goal is to raise awareness in the community to this specific technique and hopefully it can change people's lives for the better!

I see the boundary between museum space and public space as blurring; ideally art will become more accessible to all, and consequently, more influential.
